Is it me you’re looking for?

An inside look into how some of New York’s leading art directors choose and evaluate editorial collaborators.

Enough hemming and hawing, toiling and submitting—waiting with anticipation but never hearing back and never knowing why. Four art directors of leading New York publications share their process for commissioning and evaluating visuals for editorial pieces, offering a rare glimpse at how the imagery we encounter in magazines, newspapers, and online comes to exist. Informative for aspiring art directors, those looking to compare best practices, illustrators, photographers, form makers, and anyone generally curious about this process, this event will shed some light onto the journey an editorial commission takes from conception to publication—and the various detours it can take in between.

Starting with short presentations, each speaker will walk us through a highlight and lowlight from their careers thus far. This will be followed by an extended Q&A, so come prepared to have your gnawing questions answered and leave enlightened.

With experience working at publications such as The New York Times, GQ, NBC News, the New Yorker, and Splice, these art directors bring together a diversity of experience and perspective that they’re eager to share.
