Design is Haunted by History
Designing Experiences for Immersion
How design turns history into somewhere you can stand.
Some places carry their history in the walls. Others need design to help it speak. Pentagram partner Abbott Miller shares three recent projects that use graphic design, animation, and photography to create a sense of place and narrative, turning archives, landscapes, and memory into experiences you can walk into.
He’ll take us inside Museo Casa Kahlo, a new museum in the former home of Frida Kahlo’s family in Mexico City. He’ll also visit Brooklyn’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery, where the lettering on its headstones inspired a new identity. He’ll also share Amplified: The Immersive Rock Experience, which brings rock and roll photography to a floor-to-ceiling digital canvas.

Abbott Miller
Abbott is a multidisciplinary designer whose work spans brand identity, publications, environmental graphics, exhibitions, and digital media. He has evolved a hybrid design practice that crosses from page to screen to narrative and architectural environments. He has embraced the role of editor, writer, and curator in many of his exhibition and publication projects, fusing his interest in the history and theory of art, architecture, performance, fashion and design. Before joining Pentagram as partner in 1999, he founded Design/Writing/Research, a multidisciplinary studio in which he established his reputation for innovative practice.
At Pentagram, Miller has collaborated with many cultural clients including the Guggenheim Museum, the Barnes Foundation, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, the Met Museum, Cooper Union, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and has worked on large corporate rebranding projects including the Ritz-Carlton, Sotheby’s, RESY, and American Express. He has designed numerous environmental graphics programs and exhibition projects including the Harley-Davidson Museum, a traveling exhibition for the Rolling Stones, and Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure; recent projects include work for the Kennedy Center, the Frick Collection, and the Natural History Museum/La Brea Tar Pits. He and his team are currently working on a comprehensive environmental graphics program for the Getty Center.
He has received numerous awards, including the 2014 AIGA Medal, the profession’s highest honor, and his work is represented in multiple museum design collections. Miller has written extensively about design, and lectures on his work nationally and internationally.
