SMALL TALK NO. 8: SAM POTTS
Sam Potts, of Sam Potts Inc., is equal parts designer, teacher,Twitterer, and possible superhero. He bats left, throws right, and has had fiction rejected by The New Yorker and Harpers. Creative Review in the UK recently featured Potts’s design of the storefront, signage,publications, and packaging of the infamous Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. He has also done work for the IFC channel, They Might Be Giants, NYU, many publishers of books, the New York Times, and Beck(sort of). Sam Potts Inc. has been an independent graphic design practice since 2002.

Mario would like to spend his Small Talk with stories, secrets, and other such words. He will discuss the nature of design as visual communication, how communication implies dialogue and conversation, and how this emphasizes the importance of vernacular, vocabulary, tone, and inflection in design. In general, it’ll be about maintaining one’s“voice”, focusing less on the immediacy of communication, and more on the intimacy of discussion.

His first monograph, Daniel Eatock Imprint, has just been published by Princeton Architectural Press. Constantly oscillating between art and graphic design, each copy individually marked with his own thumbprint, this book is full of Eatock’s astute observations and eccentric obsessions.
