BREAKFAST CLUB NO. 7: Going Green for Real

When it comes to sustainability, theres a lot that you should be doing, but what can you really be doing? Well explore this question in a conversation led by sustainability expert Naomi Pearson. Our goal this morning will be to provide practical information and strategies for bringing your practice in line with principles of sustainability.

At the Breakfast Club, we like to move quickly from broad principles to real-life experience. We will first address the key concepts of sustainability: Life Cycle Analysis, Cradle to Cradle/Cradle to Grave, Upcycling/Downcycling/Recycling, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), and Environmental Standards (Smartwood, FSC, Green Guard), and more. Then well talk about implementation: green offices, sustainability checklists for print and environmental design, internal green conversations, movie nights, Design Evolution Radio, Biofilia Day, and more.

Naomi Pearson is a Graphic Designer and Sustainable Design Consultant with a background in Environmental Graphic Design, and a focus on developing sustainable strategies that inform the design process. Past design firms where she has worked at include Pentagram Design, Two Twelve Associates, and Arrowstreet Graphic Design. She is on The Society for Environmental Graphic Designs Green Committee and hosts the weekly radio show Design Evolution on Voice America's Green Talk Network. SEGD recently honored Naomi with a Distinguished Member Award for her Green Audit contribution to the organization’s Green Paper. Naomi’s work has also been recognized by Triplepundit, NetImpact’s Green Challenge, and Graphic Design USA. Naomi graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University and is based in Brooklyn, New York.

BREAKFAST CLUB:

AIGA/NY’s Casual Morning Get-Together for the Sharing of Knowledge and the Drinking of Coffee.*
*(or Tea)

Starting with Breakfast Club NO.1 in October 2008, we have met on the second Tuesday of every month for coffee, a nibble, and spirited conversation. Each Breakfast Club explores a specific topic of focus and is introduced by a discussion leader. Our conversations cover the range of creative, financial, and pragmatic challenges that designers too often face alone—challenges that can often be overcome with open, casual dialogue. Muffins and croissants and amazing Mud coffee are provided.

Breakfast Club is open to AIGA members only and is a free event.
