Art/Walk: a tour of Chelsea’s galleries with David Platzker
Chelsea’s bounty of art galleries and arts institutions is a treasure trove of inspiration for designers and creative souls of all stripes. But where to start?
Join us for a tour of Chelsea’s galleries led by very special guide. David Platzker is the director of Specific Object, an innovative gallery, bookshop, and storehouse for a range of items from artist's multiples to unique works of literature, music, and sound. Prior to founding Specific Object, Platzker was the executive director of Printed Matter, a non-profit institution dedicated to the promotion of artists' publications from 1998 to 2004, and he has curated exhibitions for artists including John Baldessari, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, and Claes Oldenburg.
The tour will wind through galleries large and small whose exhibitions have been hand-picked by Platzker to appeal to designers and stimulate discussions about intersections in the worlds of design and fine art. Following the walk, the group will end up at Specific Object for a look at Marcel Broodthaers’s film and book, “A Voyage on the North Sea,” and a closer look at Platzker’s incredible collection. Beer and other refreshments will be provided.
For a preview of Platzker’s lively perspective on the art world, check out his radio show for WPS1, “Recorded Matter,” at www.wps1.org and his site Specific Object.
