In/Between: Todd St. John, HunterGatherer
Please disregard the date listed for this event in the 11/6 email newsletter. The correct date for this event is Wednesday 15 November.
Todd St. John's work consistently falls in between the cracks of different mediums. And that's where he hopes all his projects will reside. From printmaking to animation, his projects all exude a focused simplicity and a distinct point of view as they manage to crystallize a wide range of interests. Todd will talk about this and other aspects of his work. He will explain what he does and doesn't have to do with the design world. Most importantly, he will talk about the value of doing things the hard way.
Limited edition silk screen prints by Todd St. John will be given to all attendees.
Todd St. John is a graphic artist whose recent projects have spanned industrial design, animation, commercial direction, music, identity design, printmaking and illustration. In 1994, Todd co-founded the clothing label Green Lady with frequent
collaborator Gary Benzel. The line embraced T-shirts and silk screens as a
non-art, democratic and accessible approach to image-making at a time before
designer T-shirt labels were ubiquitous. Green Lady existed alongside other
work until 2000, when Todd left a position as art director at MTV to
launch HunterGatherer. The studio was founded with the goal of combining
seemingly disparate projects under one roof.
Todd has exhibited work internationally, and was selected with Gary
for the 2003 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial. He teaches as a
graduate critic at the Yale School of Art.
"Green Lady: Ten Years," by Todd St. John and Gary Benzel, will be available for sale at the event. Have it signed by Todd at the reception following his presentation.
